ACE Rail Safety Action Day – Stockton

SJRRC will host an ACE Rail Safety Action Day in Stockton during See Tracks? Think Train® Week, bringing together Union Pacific Railroad, law enforcement agencies, first responders, elected officials, transportation partners and community organizations for a day focused on rail safety education and awareness.

The event will include:

10:00–10:30 a.m. – Rail Safety Press Conference
Rail, transportation, law enforcement and community leaders will reinforce the importance of railroad crossing safety, trespass prevention and public education.

10:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m. – Community Rail Safety Outreach Event
Participating agencies and organizations will host informational booths and engage directly with the community about safe behavior around railroad tracks, trains and crossings.

The event is designed to demonstrate why everyone—from motorists and pedestrians to bicyclists, students and professional drivers—has a role in preventing rail-related incidents and keeping communities safe.

Gold Runner Rail Safety Outreach – Fresno

SJJPA will continue Rail Safety Month activities on September 30 with a Gold Runner Rail Safety outreach event in Madera and Fresno.

The event will bring elected officials, community leaders, transportation partners, and rail safety stakeholders aboard a Gold Runner train for an educational experience highlighting the importance of safe behavior around active railroad corridors.

“Rail safety is a shared responsibility, and every person can help prevent tragedies by making safe choices near railroad tracks and crossings,” said SJJPA Chair Doug Verboon. “Through this event, we hope to reinforce simple but lifesaving actions: stay off the tracks, obey all warning signs and signals, and always remain alert around trains.”

In addition to the train trip, SJJPA staff will be at the Fresno Station, 2650 Tulare Street, Fresno, CA 93721, throughout the day engaging directly with passengers and sharing rail safety information and educational materials.

The outreach will reinforce important Rail Safety Month messages, including staying off railroad tracks, obeying warning signs and signals, and remaining alert around trains and railroad crossings.

Save Lives Tell 5

September activities by SJRRC and SJJPA support California Rail Safety Month and California Operation Lifesaver’s Save Lives Tell 5 campaign.

The campaign encourages Californians to choose safety whenever they are near railroad tracks and trains, share important rail safety information with at least five family members, friends, coworkers or neighbors, and challenge those five people to continue spreading the message.

SJRRC and SJJPA encourage residents throughout the ACE and Gold Runner corridors to remember and share these essential rail safety practices:

• • Always expect a train. Trains can travel on any track, at any time and from either direction.
  • Never walk on or alongside railroad tracks. Railroad tracks, bridges and tunnels are private property, and trespassing is illegal and dangerous.
  • Cross tracks only at designated public crossings. Always obey signs, signals and crossing gates.
  • Never try to beat a train. Do not drive, walk or bike around lowered gates or flashing warning lights. Wait until the gates are completely raised and the lights have stopped flashing.
  • Look carefully in both directions before crossing. Multiple tracks may mean multiple trains.
  • Stay off railroad bridges and trestles and out of railroad tunnels. These areas are designed only for trains and do not provide a safe place for pedestrians.
  • Remember that trains always have the right of way. This includes over vehicles, emergency responders, bicyclists and pedestrians.
  • Stay outside the danger zone. Trains can extend three feet or more beyond the rails, so remain at least 15 feet away from railroad tracks.
  • Never take photos or videos on railroad tracks. It is both dangerous and illegal.
  • Stay alert and avoid distractions. Put phones away and remove headphones when approaching or crossing railroad tracks.

Rail safety is a year-round commitment. Choose safety, tell five people and challenge them to tell five more. Together, we can build safer communities and help prevent track tragedies.
